Artifacts from the Field:  One of the things that I do with AP Biology each year during the four weeks of class after the exam, is to show them a collection of films.  It varies from year to year, but tends to coalesce around a loose theme while still endeavoring to consist entirely of films that the students haven’t watched.  This years theme became “Documentaries” very early on, so I dusted off my various Werner Herzog and Errol Morris flicks and brought them in.  On the whole, they were pretty well-recieved.

In reading the reactions to the various films, one student’s thoughts seemed to strike a particularly resonant chord with me.  The student in question has distinguished herself by consistently submitted the best writing for AP Biology that I have seen in a good, long while.  I thought her reaction to “Gates of Heaven” (above) was about as spot on as it could get, so I asked her if she wouldn’t mind if I stuck it up here for the readership. Lucky for you all, she was cool with it.

Enjoy.
